This is an excavated coat-sized button with a brass face that consists of a large raised star with a block letter “I” recessed into its center and the word “MISSISSIPPI” spelled out around the parameter edge. The brass face is free of dings and dents and the detail is good. It has a nice chocolate brown patina. Gilt wash remains within the recessed “I” and around the all edges of the letters spelling Mississippi and the central star. The button back and wire shank are made of brass, all of which is intact. Shank is bent about 45 degrees. There is a maker’s back mark that reads, “HYDE & GOODRICH, N.O.”  The place of recovery is not known.   [jet]
