These two lead pieces of the bases of Confederate Read shells were recovered in the 1960’s by Dr. Rees Buttram from Sulphur Branch in Trestle, Alabama. They had been fired by Morton’s Battery under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Confederate assault on the Federal fort there, where he captured the stockade.
Larger piece measures 3” in diameter x 4” high. Smaller piece measures 3” in diameter x 1 ½” high. Both are in relic condition with surface rust and pitting. [sm]
