Here is an excavated, seldom-seen Confederate 3” field artillery projectile commonly referred to as an Archer Bolt. The design was likely produced by Dr. Robert Archer a partner of Joseph Anderson, the superintendent at the Tredegar foundry in Richmond. Constructed of cast iron, it features a pointed nose and a stepped/tapered base. Fired from a 3” ordnance rifle, this bolt has lost its original 1 3/8”-wide lead sabot that was placed behind the center of the bolt. Used at the very beginning of the war, they were described as ineffective. Seldom recovered from CW battlefields after 1862, the bolt has been cleaned and exhibits light pitting. Surface has a dark chocolate brown color. Coated. Bolt weighs approximately eight pounds.

This Confederate Archer bolt will make a rare addition to any Civil War field artillery display or “heavy metal” collection.  [jet]
