Excavated example of one of the earliest models of the State of New York (SNY) militia waist belt plate. Circa 1840-1844. Brass face with lead filled back. This style originally utilized iron wire hooks. All of the known examples are from a ship wreck off the coast of South Carolina. Brass face is complete and retains its brass color. Lead back is complete, exhibiting a dark gray/black patina. The iron wire hooks have completely dissolved. An excellent specimen. [jet]
