This excavated Pattern 1839 oval US cartridge box plate has beautiful clean brown patina. The brass face is nice and the “US” stands out well. The plate’s reverse has 99% of the lead fill with some very minor edge loss “at 1 o’clock”. The two iron loops remain, but are bent over and heavily rusted. The relic hunter wrote on the back, “FOUND WK OF 5/28/… / HANCOCK’S EXTREME LEFT FLANK IN FRONT OF TRENCHES / WILDERNESS”.
