This excavated Pattern 1839 oval US belt plate has clean green-brown patina. The brass face is very nice and the “US” stands out well. The plate’s reverse has 99.9% of the lead fill with some very minor loss along the bottom edge. The tongue and both arrow hooks remain. The relic hunter wrote some cryptic notations on the back that an accompanying paper defines as being dug at Racoon Ford Road near Culpeper. An original “dug” Civil War enlistedman’s belt buckle.
