This excavated artifact is a rare and very fine Federal engineer shako hat device. The rolled, thin, sheet-brass insignia is intricately stamped and depicts a medieval-style castle with two turrets that flank a small center turret with a gated sally port. This larger style would have been worn on a tall shako. The insignia device is in wonderful condition for an excavated relic and exhibits a perfect green patina under surface dirt. The two iron attachment wires have rusted away. No folds or creases, only minor dings. Artifact measures 3 ½” long by 2 ¼” high. Never cleaned. This “dug” brass insignia exhibits a pleasing patina overall. A very fine, and rarely seen relic shako insignia. [jet]
