CONFEDERATE “GUTTER-BACK” FRAME BUCKLE

$500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 986-65

Like some other versions of the frame buckle, this sand-cast brass buckle has a crossbar and tongues that are flush with the frame, but in this case the frame itself is made with a hollow back. Overall measurements are 60mm by 68mm. One tongue is slightly bent, otherwise this is a nice excavated example of the frame buckle second in popularity to the “standard” version. No find site is recorded for this plate, but is found in different theatres of the war. The hollow back was probably an effort to conserve brass without sacrificing too much strength. There was also less finishing work involved since the back of this style plate usually shows the crude casting.  [sr]
