This Federal cartridge box plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered from North Anna, Virginia in July 1956. Plate is in good excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a bold “US”. Face is good condition and the surface has acquired a mixed brown/green patina. Lead filled back retains 99% of lead fill and a small shovel “ding” on one edge. Very weak “W. H. SMITH” maker’s mark. Both wire loops have rusted away.
Recovered by Sid Kerksis and comes with the envelope he stored the relic in. Envelope marked, “North Anna / Jul 56 / C B P / “Smith” / 2d – 9th Corps / Lowrey house line.” Mr. Sydney C. Kerksis was a legendary early Civil War relic hunter and the author of “Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874”.
This original brass U.S. enlistedman’s cartridge box plate would be fine addition to any military belt plate display or Civil War collection. [jet]
