This Federal cartridge box plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered from Chantilly, Virginia in May 1954. Plate is in very good excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a bold “US”. Face is very good condition and the surface has acquired a handsome smooth dark patina. Lead filled back retains 99.9% of lead fill. No maker’s markings. One of the two wire loops remains.
Recovered by Sid Kerksis and comes with the envelope he stored the relic in. Envelope marked, “Chantilly / May 54 / U S Ctg box / plate / Steven’s assault.” Mr. Sydney C. Kerksis was a legendary early Civil War relic hunter and the author of “Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874”.
This highly pleasing, original brass U.S. enlistedman’s cartridge box plate would be fine addition to any military belt plate display or Civil War collection. [jet]
