This is an excavated “eagle” plate for the shoulder strap of the infantry cartridge box. Brass face has a nice brown patina. The face has a slight reverse curve caused by ground freeze and thaw over the years. The plate’s reverse has 98% of the lead fill. The two iron loops have rusted off. There is one very small hole through the plate, at the edge rim in the area of the eagle’s beak. This relic was recovered at Falling Waters. Appears to have had a light coating of vaseline applied to face at some point in the past. An original “dug” Civil War enlistedman’s eagle breast plate.   [jet]
