Item is in good relic condition with moderate surface rust and pitting. Measures 7” tall; opening is approx. 1" in dia.

Recovered by well-known relic hunter and collector Terry Waxham in 1979 from the 3rd Louisiana Redan at Vicksburg. William F. Howard acquired this relic from Waxham in the early 1980’s and it was purchased from him by Andrew Keyser in 2011. The 3rd Louisiana Redan was a strong Confederate fortification which guarded one of the major roads into Vicksburg. It was heavily bombarded by Union forces throughout the siege. The position was temporarily breeched when Union forces exploded a mine that they had dug under the redan, but Confederate infantry quickly retook the vital fortification. Letter of documentation by Mr. Keyser accompanies this item.
