EXCAVATED ARTILLERY VENT PUNCH

This 5 ¼” long tool was used by US and CS artillery during the Civil War.  Made up of a 4 ¼” long rod attached an octagonal head.  This head has a hole in the center.  These were used to clear the vent hole at the breech of a cannon.  This piece is unusual in that it is an excavated specimen.  Most of these that are available are non-dug.  This was recovered in central Virginia.   [jet]
