This is a Civil War saber that was referred to as the “light cavalry” saber by the US Ordnance Department.
Measuring about 41” overall, the rusty blade is about 35” long with a width of just over 1”. No markings are visible through the rust. Although a “dug” relic, the iron is stable and there is no active flaking.
The brass knuckle guard and pommel have a nice dark green patina. The grip and wire are long gone, but otherwise this sword is complete and solid and a perfect excavated example of a M-1860 cavalry saber. [jet]
