This is a Civil War saber referred to as the “light cavalry” saber by the US Ordnance Department.
Measuring about 41” overall, the rusty blade is about 35” long with a width of just over 1”. Some markings are visible through the rust at the ricasso. On one side is “US / [initials] / 18__”. Although a “dug” relic, the iron is stable and there is no active flaking.
The brass knuckle guard and pommel have a nice bronze patina. At some point the pommel was removed and a crude wood grip was put in place and the tang peened back over the pommel. The original grip and wire are long gone, but otherwise this sword is complete and solid and a perfect excavated example of a M-1860 cavalry saber. [jet]
