NEW MODEL 1859 SHARPS CARBINE CONVERTED TO CENTERFIRE

$1,450.00 SOLD

Item Code: G3790

The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is an example of the New Model 1859 Sharps carbine that was converted to use centerfire cartridges and features serial #72294.

Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a “straight-breech” type lockplate. No barrel address and only very faint traces of “NEW MODEL” stamped to rear of sight.  All gunmetal is in very good condition with a gray patina overall and smooth finish. Sling bar and ring on left side. Patent stamps on lockplate are clear and distinct. Serial number is sharply stamped onto the receiver tang. Patent stamp on left side is worn. Breechblock operating lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp. Bore is bright with worn rifling.

The lever/tab that stops the Lawrence primer feed is missing from the larger pellet primer component.

All wood is good. The forestock is original to the gun and has nice walnut color and finish. The shoulder stock was replaced when converted. No cartouches. Original butt plate features cut-out for patch box, but replacement stock that was added during conversion was not cut for patch box. Initials and name lightly carved into butt stock.

This New Model 1859 Sharps conversion would be a good “shooter”.  [jet]
