Blade is rusted throughout with light to heavy surface pitting. The very tip of the blade is broken. Overall the blade meas. approx. 34.00 inches long with 28.00 inch unstopped fuller. No markings are visible on the ricasso.
Hilt has the counterguard but the knucklebow and branches have snapped off. Guard wiggles a bit. It is slightly bent and has small break behind the pointed quillon. Wood grip is present with an open split at the back and a smaller one on the side. Plain straight wire wrap is present as is the pommel cap. Wire is complete and unbroken. Brass guard and cap have a nice dark patina.
Saber still fits inside its iron scabbard. Scabbard is rusted and pitted throughout. It has several small dents and five small holes around the area of the throat. The largest hole is approx. 0.75 of an inch by 0.50 an inch. Brass throat and brass mounts with both rings are present. Top of throat looks to be marked with a Roman numeral “XXV.” The seam on the scabbard runs up the back and is very crude and no doubt Confederate made.
Very interesting relic. [ad]
