Excavated iron lockplate from a Model 1855 rifle musket.  Lockplate only. Hump back style plate featuring cutout for Maynard’s primers.  Relic has moderate pitting from being buried but has been well cleaned and preserved by electrolysis.  The date of manufacture “1858” is visible on left portion of lock. “U.S.” and portions of “SPRINGFIELD” are visible also.  [jet]
