Pontifex & Wood London Lead bar recovered from SS Phantom in 1960’s measuring approx. 34 ½” x 5” x 2”.  110 pounds of lead meant for the Southern Army, went down off the coast of North Carolina in 1863. Would have produced 1760 bullets, for the Southern Cause. One of 200 ingots that was on the manifest of the SS Phantom, recovered in 1960's by a diver named Smith.  He was a recreation diver and his parents owned a metal fabrication shop on Kerr Street in Wilmington, NC, named Flowers Metal Shop.  The diver died at a young age, and his parents had this ingot on display in the front window of their shop for 30 years in honor of their deceased son.  Many times the mother had been offered cash for the bar by patrons of the shop, but she refused to sell, until the Kerr St. shop closed down a few years ago.  It was in business over 50 years.

The SS Phantom was a Confederate Steel screw steamer of 322 gross tons, built in 1863 at Liverpool, England.  On September 23rd, 1863, while en route from Bermuda with a cargo of arms, 9 cases of whiskey, 2 cases of gin, 200 pigs of lead, 3 cannons, 50 cases of Austrian rifle muskets and other Confederate government stores, Phantom was chased aground by the USS Connecticut, 200–250 yards off New Topsail Inlet in 15 feet of water. A strongbox with $45,000 in gold supposedly fell over the ship's side.  Phantom was set afire by her crew to prevent capture and was further shelled and destroyed by the USS Connecticut after recovering 16 cases of rifle muskets and other goods. The Confederates also salvaged some of the goods.  [ss]
