Excavated socket bayonet for the Springfield rifle musket.  About 4” of the blade point was bent back to make a hook. These are often believed to have been used as “dead man” hooks to move over-ripe bodies to field graves. However they could also have been used as simple pot hooks. This one has the typical heavy surface rust of a “dug” relic. It is uncoated but the iron is stable.  Recovered at Chancellorsville, VA.  [jet]
