This is a fired and excavated artillery shell recovered at Shiloh. This is the nose and sabot portions only, the base cup having been stripped off when fired. The separation of the parts of Hotchkiss shells was a common problem.
The condition of the iron and lead is excellent. The iron nose section retains a smooth surface with no flame grooves. This probably would have employed the “West Point” type of percussion fuse. The anvil is gone but traces of the threads are visible within the fuse hole. The base of this section is marked in white paint “SHILOH”. The lead sabot features rifling grooves of the cannon barrel.
Unloaded and completely safe. Coated and well preserved condition.
This size projectile would have been fired from a six-pounder Wiard rifle. [jet]
