This is an excavated specimen and this common size was for the 3” Ordnance rifle. This is the nose portion of the 3-piece Hotchkiss artillery shell. No lead sabot or iron base cup. Fuse is also missing. The shell exhibits the 3 flame grooves on the sides. Iron is smooth and in good condition. “INERT” stenciled in white paint; probably from a G.A.R. post or museum. [jet]

This beautiful, identified Confederate major’s coat, sash, sword belt, sash, and holster, once in the Texas Civil War Museum, comes with two brown ink notes that were pinned to it, one reading: “Major W. F. Haines / Bowens Staff / Confederate… (1179-277). Learn More »
