NON-REGULATION STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD PICKED UP AT FRANKLIN TENNESSEE

$550.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1061-44

The drawn sword measures a total length of 37.50” long from point to pommel. The steel blade is 31.75” long with a 18.75” long stopped central fuller. The blade surface is very dark and in semi-relic condition with pitting throughout which gets heavier near the point. The true edge has several large nicks scattered along its surface.

The obverse ricasso has signs of a faint etched maker mark that looks to read “SCHUYLER, HARTLEY & GRAHAM” and is stamped “PROVED” in a small circle at center. The opposite ricasso clearly shows a standing knight and “W. CLAUBERG, SOLINGEN.” Though the blade surface is dark a close look will reveal outlines of the etched decoration. The leather washer at the base of the blade is missing.

The detailed iron hilt features a guard and knucklebow with a single wide band with cutout spread-winged eagle and a cutout block “US” at center. Hilt features a grooved, center-swelled wooden handle wrapped in gray sharkskin that shows moderate wear. Skin is bound with two twisted brass wires however the upper third of the sharkskin and wire are missing. Grip has an iron spine with ears on either side with an iron ferrule at bottom and a tiered pommel. All the iron on the hilt has a uniform dark patina from being exposed to the elements.

The metal scabbard is dark throughout and matches the blade and hilt perfectly. There is one small hole just above the drag and a small dent also. Both rings and mounts are present. As is the drag. Between the mounts is an old white “sticky” label with “FRANKLIN TENN.” In two lines in ink. Label looks to be mid-Twentieth Century.

Item is said to have been picked up at Franklin, Tennessee sometime after the battle. Item does indeed have the same look, wear and patina as other items we have handled with an early battlefield pickup provenance.  [ad]
