This artifact is a fine, excavated example of a convex two-piece CS infantry script I button as worn on the uniforms of Confederate foot soldiers.
This brass, coat-size button has a border and a central, large Old English “I”. This excavated button is in solid shape. 23-mm. The shank is present and straight. Maker’s backmark is worn but readable, “S. ISAACS CAMPBELL & Co. London”. Round piece of brown colored cloth remains behind button. Cloth measures about one inch in diameter.
Recovered from Cold Harbor, VA. Overall green patina. This would make a fine addition to any Civil War button display. [sl]
