This large piece of wood is the root from an oak tree that once grew in the Wilderness area of Virginia south of the Orange Plank Road. The root section is gnarled and thick with a younger root branching off of it. Apparently most of the tree was fallen over and dying when it began to spring a new root.

Deeply embedded in the old gnarled root is a .58 three ring minie ball. The projectile is seated in such a way as to show the side of the bullet.  Its three rings are clearly visible.

The main root section is “Y” shaped and meas. approx. 7.00 inches long on one branch and 10.00 inches long on the other. The width is approx. 3.00 inches. Shooting off one of the arms is a young root that meas. approx. 12.50 inches long x 1.00 inch wide.  [ad]
