This is an excavated specimen and was for the 3” Parrott and Ordnance rifles. This shell was fired and retains its lead sabot and base cup. Fuse adapter is gone. The iron is rusty, typical of “dug” iron, but shows no pitting. Lead driving band has white patina and exhibits grooves from being fired. Three flame grooves run up the sides. Hotchkiss patent information remains visible on base cup.
A very nice excavated field artillery shell. [jet]
