GEORGIA STATE SEAL BUTTON EXCAVATED AT CLARKS MOUNTAIN

Clarks Mountain provides a wonderful view of central Virginia. It was a gathering point for Jackson’s forces in 1862, but even more importantly, was a key post for Confederate officers to observe Federal troop movements.

This is a nice coat size Georgia state seal button excavated at that important landmark. The back and shank are in place. There is even a section of gilt color remaining in the unmarked depressed channel. The face bears the state coat of arms with the “Constitution” on arch supported by three columns wrapped with banners reading Wisdom, Justice and Moderation with an armed soldier between the left and center columns. The small details are indistinct, but the word “Constitution” and details of a sunburst or sunrise below the arch are crisp. The tones are grayish green and there are no dents or pushes. Georgia’s Governor Brown was difficult to get along with, even for the Confederate government, but the state supplied many troops to the Confederacy and paid the price as the scene of heavy fighting in Sherman’s campaign against Atlanta and his march to the sea, intended to, “make Georgia howl.” [sr]
