This is a cuff size Georgia state seal button was excavated at Clark’s Mountain, an important observation point in central Virginia. The back and shank are in place. The face bears the state coat of arms of an arch supported by three pillars wrapped with banners and a soldier on guard in the portico. Being a small size button, thee words “Constitution” on the arch and “Wisdom,” “Justice” and “Moderation” on the banners are indistinct, but the general motif and its elements are clear, with good detail on the sunburst under the arch. The tones are grayish-green and brown. Georgia supplied many troops to the Confederacy and paid the price as the scene of heavy fighting in Sherman’s campaign against Atlanta and his march to the sea, intended to, “make Georgia howl.” [sr]
