This Confederate artillery enlisted man’s coat button was excavated in central Virginia as Clark’s Mountain. The face has a deep, chocolate brown patina with a little green at the 12 o’clock and 7 o’clock positions. The “A” is well defined. The back and shank are in place though showing crusty, light brown corrosion. Though frequently challenged by technical difficulties, Confederate artillery played an important role on the battlefield under dynamic leaders like John Pelham and Porter Alexander.    [sr]
