CONFEDERATE COPPER TIME FUSE ADAPTER FROM DUTCH GAP

$55.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 766-1296

This fuse adapter is in very good condition and has an even dark green (almost black) patina. This specimen was recovered from “Dutch Gap / Bermuda Hundred Union Camp” in 1981. Information marked on a tape label.

This is the long pattern fuse adapter for use in rifled artillery shells. The longer fuse allowed for longer burn times to cover the distances the rifled cannons could shoot. These replaced older wood fuse adapters in the Spring of 1863 and continued to be used to the end of the war. This example has less taper to the lower portion.

These adapters were cast and then turned on a lathe. This one is threaded with the typical 12 threads per inch. A central hole was drilled out to accept the paper time fuse. All featured a flanged head with two spanner holes. This specimen measures 1.82” long x 1.25” across the flange.   [jet]
