This is a 9” breech portion of an Enfield rifle barrel that was cut off. The breech tang is broken at the screw hole and there is no cone. The typical English long-range sight remains.
Iron is pitted as this is a “dug” relic. Metal is completely stable; it has been cleaned and coated. Recovered on Maryland Heights by Dean Thomas.
These heights were heavily fortified with artillery to protect Harpers Ferry. Maryland Heights is the highest mountain overlooking Harpers Ferry and soldiers from one side or the other were there throughout the entire Civil War. [jet]
