This is an excavated specimen and was for the 3” Parrott and Ordnance rifles. This shell was fired and retains its lead sabot and base cup. Wood fuse adapter is gone. The iron is pitted, typical of “dug” iron, but has been cleaned and coated. Lead driving band has gray patina and exhibits grooves from being fired. Three flame grooves run up the sides.
Reported to have been recovered from Fredericksburg, VA.
A nice complete excavated Hotchkiss artillery shell. [jet]
