CONFEDERATE COPPER TIME FUSE ADAPTER

$50.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 766-1287

This is the long pattern fuse adapter for use in rifled artillery shells. The longer fuse allowed for longer burn times to cover the distances the rifled cannons could shoot. These replaced older wood fuse adapters in the Spring of 1863 and continued to be used to the end of the war. This example has only a slight taper to the lower portion and a thicker flange with a slight bevel to the top edge.

These adapters were cast and then turned on a lathe. This one is threaded with the typical 12 threads per inch. A central hole was drilled out to accept the paper time fuse. All featured a flanged head with two spanner holes. This specimen measures 1.89” long x 1.2” across the flange.

This fuse adapter is in good condition and has a green patina.    [jet]
