Found by noted author and relic hunter Stanley Phillips, one of the early pioneers of relic hunting whose dedication to the preservation of Civil War artifacts is still respected by the relic hunting community to this day! Painted on the shell is “BURST / 3” – U.S. – 3 PNDR. / HOTCHKISS SHELL”, and “FOUND _____ 7 1964 / VA”. This projectile is an early variety with no flame grooves cut into the body. The intact lead sabot shows lands and grooves of the cannon’s rifling. Over half of the body remains intact. Seldom do any of Stan’s relics come on today’s market.
