This is one of the only steel scabbards produced towards the end of the War. They were manufactured under a contract for 20,000 dated 8 August 1862. The leather is long gone but the 18 ¼ inch steel section is all that remains. It is heavily rusted and has been lacquered. It was recovered at Cold Harbor, Virginia.
