This leather cap box is in somewhat stiff but good condition. The leather looks and feels as though it has been exposed to the weather. There are some signs of shrinkage caused by moisture but none of it has affected the stitching.

The outer flap of the box is a little shorter than a US made cap box and has a rough finished edge. The flap has a single line of stitching that once anchored the now missing latch tap. The inner flap is also crudely made with short thick ears on either end. The body of the box is well made and tight stitched with a lead finial. The interior of the box has the remains of the fleece but no nipple pick. The back of the box has a single wide belt loop. The leather does exhibit some light wear from use and age but it was well cared for over the years.

Attached to the lead finial is a very old tag with an ink inscription that reads “SOLDIER’S CAP BOX PICKED UP ON BATTLE FIELD OF ANTIETAM, OR SHARPSBURG.”

This is an exciting relic with all the things you would like to see in a battlefield recovered item, signs of age, use and exposure to the elements with a wonderful label attesting to its recovery.
