Relic artifact of a Pattern 1853 Enfield Musket tompion recovered from the rebel shipwreck the “Modern Greece” measures 1 3/4 “ in length.

The Modern Greece was a 210-foot English ship loaded with hundreds of tons of rifles, gunpowder and other goods. She was creeping along the coast of North Carolina making for the Cape Fear River and Wilmington when she was spotted in the murky light just before dawn by two ships of the Union blockading force. She was chased and ran aground while trying to get under the protection of the guns of Fort Fisher. Some of her cargo was saved but the rest sank with the ship. Over the years many relics have been legally recovered from the wreck of the ship and this item is one of them.
