According to Francis Lord in his book CIVIL WAR COLLECTOR"S ENCYCLOPEDIA, stocks were issued to soldiers to force them to hold up their heads, and to keep their necks warm. Some other historians say they were worn as protection from saber blows. For whatever reason they were worn, they show up in Civil War period photographs. This stock is 1 5/8 inches wide and made from black bridle leather. On each end is sewn a 13/16 inch strap, one side with a buckle. The steel buckle is painted black and the buckle is marked PATENT 1855. It also has two punched holes and a piece of leather that was probably used to adjust it to a larger size neck. The stock has been in a folded position for a lot of years but is soft enough to unfold if done carefully.
