Item Code: M25386

Item is a standard issue OD green World War One era blanket that is heavily embroidered with a flying eagle and a waving “Betsy Ross” style 13 star flag.

The blanket itself is made of OD green wool with bound top and bottom edges. It measures approx. 78.25 inches long x 64.00 inches wide. Each end of the blanket has a horizontal black end stripe approx. 2.50 inches wide running completely across the blanket approx. 7.50 inches from each bound edge. At center of the blanket is a stitched “US” done in 5.25 inch high letters. Together the letters “US” have a horizontal measurement of 8.75 inches. The overall condition of the blanket is very good. There is some minor mothing in one corner and the bound edges show wear. There is also light scattered surface dirt throughout.

Embroidered on the bottom half of the blanket is an eagle in flight. This eagle meas. approx. 44.00 inches long with his wings spread out above him and dominating the upper portion of the blanket. The lower portion of the eagle’s body is embroidered in an orange/brown yarn while his head and tail feathers are white. The eagle’s details have all been done in a dark green yarn and are complete throughout but only the bottom quadrants of the eagle’s body, his head, tail feathers and most of the wings have been filled in.

Above the eagle is a complete US flag waving on a pole which dominates the upper half of the blanket not taken up by the eagle’s wings. The flag measures approx. 15.50 inches on the hoist x 22.00 inches on the fly. The canton is done in blue yarn with 5-pointed stars done in white yarn arranged in a circle of 12 with a larger 13th star at center of the circle. The 13 alternating stripes are done in red and white yarn. The pole that the flag is on is done in white yarn topped by a large star with a white border and red center.

Observing the blanket from above the outline of a riband can be seen in the eagle’s beak but this was never completed. The ends of the riband are marked by one white and one red star that were completed.

The embroidery is in very good condition for the blankets age. There are some small sections of missing or pulled yarn but nothing major.

This is an impressive piece of American folk art.  [ad]
