PAIR OF CIVIL WAR BRASS NCO STAFF SHOULDER SCALES

$275.00 SOLD

Item Code: 1000-2393

Here is a fine pair of shoulder scales for Sergeant Major and other members of the non-commissioned staff of the Civil War era. These devices were worn on the 1858 pattern dress coat (9-button enlisted frock).

This style of enlisted shoulder scale was specified for members of the regimental noncommissioned staff: the sergeant major, quartermaster sergeant and commissary sergeant (and perhaps the hospital steward also.)

This rank was distinguished by the full crescent (top and bottom) and three rows of false rivets on the strap portion of the epaulets. Each scale is complete with the attachment bar on the underside and turn-buckle.  The scales measure approximately 7” long x 2 1/8” on the strap and 4 ¼” across the crescent.

These scales were attached to the uniform by passing the attachment bar under one or two small straps sewn to the coat and locked by a small brass turn-buckle sewn to the coat at the collar.  A very nice pair of original NCO shoulder scales.  [jet]
