(SUPPOSED CS) FLAG REMNANT

$250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 822-17

This flag remnant was found in a GAR hall in Bradford, Pennsylvania. It was displayed with a large fragment of a Confederate flag which had been brought back from the war by a soldier, and is thought to also be Confederate. The remnant is dark blue silk with a gold star painted on it.  The silk is very fine and has some small splits in the fabric. The gold star still retains the original bright gilt. Some surface dirt is present.

Capturing the enemy’s flag was considered a top spoil of war. It was common that if captured, the flag would be cut up into pieces for the soldiers to have as souvenirs. It was a great honor to be a color-bearer and many young men died in battle trying to protect their unit’s flag.
