FRAGMENT OF A 33-STAR FLAG - THE FIRST UNITED STATES FLAG OF THE CIVIL WAR 1861

$295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M26444

Excellent condition unframed display is 11" X 14" and double matted [cream and crimson red]. Each star was sewn to the original blue fabric of the canton of the flag. A star from a very rare 33 star flag just like the one that flew over Harper's Ferry when John Brown's raid occurred in 1859 as well as the 33 star flag that flew over Fort Sumter in April. Star measures approx. 2 3/4" across at widest points.

When the Civil War began the United States flag that flew over the Fort Sumter was a 33-star flag. That flag was used until July 3rd, 1861, thus the only major battle fought under the 33-star flag was the assault on Fort Sumter on April 12th, 1861. When Kansas was admitted to the Union the 34th star was added. This star is hand-made and sewn on a light blue background and the arrangement of the stars was in the scarcer concentric circle pattern with one large star in the middle representing the new state of Oregon. This flag was used for two years from July 4th, 1859 to July 3rd, 1861. The 33-star flag flew over Harpers Ferry when John Brown captured the arsenal and when he was captured by Robert E. Lee's forces in October 1859.

Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity showing the flag canton before it was sectioned into pieces.   [ld]
