Item Code: 1097-106

This 34-star US flag is printed on cotton and outlined with black bunting.

The actual size of the flag meas. just over 4.75 inches on the hoist x 6.50 inches on the fly. Hand stitched to the flags edge is 0.75 of an inch of black cotton bunting with an unfinished edge.

The colors on the face of the flag are good with the white stripes showing discoloration from age and storage. There are no rips or tears.

The flag is attached to a hand-held stick by glue. The stick meas. approx. 0.25 inch wide and 11.50 inches long. The bottom of the stick is chipped.

The US flag was changed from 34 to 35 stars in July of 1863 with the addition of West Virginia to the Union, but no doubt earlier versions of the flag were still in use by individuals at the end of the war.  It is believed that the black bunting was added to this 34-star flag in mourning for President Lincoln.  [ad]
