Blue wool body with a black bound edge visor with a green underside. The base of the cap has a black faded horizontal band with Navy side buttons and a heavy gold braid chinstrap that has also darkened with age. Attached to the lower band is a full embroidered bullion eagle and shield with crossed anchors. All the bullion has tarnished to a dark color. The interior has the complete sweatband but the stitching on the back section of the band has rotted causing a slight curl to the leather. The exterior of the cap has one or two small moth nips otherwise the cap is in good condition.
Tucked inside the hat is a card with a ball point pen inscription in a shaky hand that reads “ENSIGN G.W. STRICKLER OCT. 1918” and “A. 2/19.”
Efforts to identify Ensign Strickler have not been successful. Further research is needed.
