Black felt helmet with brass spike in good condition missing only the leather chin strap.

The body of this helmet is in excellent condition. It has no visible weak spots, creases or rips. The exterior is very clean. There is black leather trim running around the bottom edge. This edging is complete and shows moderate wear below each side-button.

Around the base of the crown is a black leather band with side-buttons bearing a quill pen and key. Attached to the front is a large stamped brass spread-winged eagle with a patriotic shield on its chest with crossed silver quill pen and key Quartermaster insignia at center. The top of the crown has a six-sided fluted brass spike attached. The spike has a very detailed stamped brass oak leaf base.

The interior of the helmet matches the exterior in condition. The brown leather sweatband is perfect. It meas. approx. 2.00 inches in height and is complete all the way around. The rest of the interior is very clean.

The Post Quartermaster insignia of a crossed quill and key was adopted in 1885.
