White cloth covered cork helmet with brass spike.

The body of this helmet is in excellent condition. It has no visible weak spots, creases or rips. The exterior has moderate surface dirt. The cork under the cloth has kept its shape and is strong throughout.

Around the base of the crown is a white cloth band. This band is pierced on both sides by a stamped brass side buttons with crossed rifles. Each of the side buttons has a small hook for holding a chinstrap that is now missing. Attached to the front of the helmet is a large stamped brass spread-winged eagle with a patriotic shield on its chest with crossed rifles behind it. At center of the shield is a silver number “17.” The top of the crown has a brass spike with a base of oak leaves done in stamped brass. Also behind the spike is a small patriotic shield with a hook for an alternate chinstrap anchor.

The interior of the helmet is in excellent condition. The brown leather sweatband is perfect. It meas. approx. 2.00 inches in height and is complete all the way around. The underside of the sweatband is stamped “THE WM. HORSTMANN CO. / CONTRACT, MARCH 4TH, 1899 / PHILADELPHIA.” Linear is complete with cork spacers. The rest of the interior is very clean.
