The body of this black felt helmet is in good condition. It has no visible weak spots or creases however the back brim is missing approx. 1.75 x 0.75 inch section of felt covering. The exterior is otherwise very clean. There is black leather trim running around the bottom edge. This edging is badly worn and missing from the back brim.
Around the base of the crown is a black cloth band. Side buttons are missing. Attached to the front is a large stamped brass spread-winged eagle on an “EXCELSIOR” shield with a white metal number “22” attached. The top of the crown has a stamped brass spike base with four arms each with a flower at the tip. The spike is unscrewed from the top so as to allow the helmet to fit in the tin carrying case. The spike provided with the helmet does not fit the screw hole on the top of the helmet
The interior of the helmet matches the exterior in condition except there is no sweatband.
The black tin carrying case is in very nice shape. It has 98% of the original paint on the outside and 100% of the white paint inside. Closing latch is present and operable. Case has no dents. Affixed to the front is a brass disc with “HORSTMANN BROS & CO. ARMY NAVY GOODS PHILA.” [ad]
