Beautiful, Model 1881 cavalry dress helmet in excellent condition. This example is composed of a dark blue-black felt. The helmet is trimmed out with a 1” decorative leather band and ¼” visor edging. All brass hardware is present: Federal spread-wing eagle plate with shield and crossed sabers, oak leaf crown base with plume socket shaft, crossed saber side buttons, plus two split rings with brass decorated bases. A silver “6” is affixed to the front of the shield. All brass bears a dark patina.
The original yellow horsehair plume is in superb condition for its age. The yellow knotted helmet cord is likewise in excellent condition. Internally, the 2” sweat band is totally intact and complete. The manufactures name of HORSTMANN BROS PHILADELPHIA is stamped in raised lettering on the brass ventilator ring inside the top of crown. One minor defect should be noted, one of the chinstrap “slides” has split and was cellophane taped in place. Excellent condition specimen to add to your advanced Indian War period collection. [jet]
