Body of black leather with gilt brass fittings including trim on square front visor. Chin straps secured by side posts with cockades of Germany (R) and Bavaria (L). fluted style spike rests on a cruciform base secured by gilded studs. The gilded front plate displays two opposing lions supporting an oval shield bearing the State Arms of Bavaria with scroll. Laurel wreaths between lions’ legs were not present on helmets manufactured after 1914. The liner is pre-war – an officer’s silk and leather liner. Bavaria did not adopt the Prussian pattern “Kugel” (ball) top for artillery helmets until 1916.
