MODEL 1858 FORAGE CAP WITH REPLACED LINING & L. J. & I. MAKER'S LABEL

$1,395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M25709

Standard issue Model 1858 forage cap in overall good condition.

The blue wool exterior shows some light scattered moth bites but the cap still presents a pleasing appearance and displays very well. The top of the disc has a hole approx. 0.25 inch x 0.50 an inch at about the 8 o’clock position. There is a small repair just above the chinstrap button on the left side and a 1.00 inch vertical split in the back just above the bottom edge of the cap.

Visor is tightly attached and has the usual light surface crazing. Leather chin strap is anchored by two General Service eagle buttons and has the brass slider but no leather keepers.

Interior has a complete, wide, ox-blood colored sweatband while the brown polished cotton lining is a replacement that was well done. The original liner rotted, as evidenced by the remains of the original still stuck to the bottom of the disc. The original lining was left in the crown because it still bears the original maker’s label which reads “SIZE NO. 1 / 6 ¾ / U. S. ARMY / L. J. & I. PHILLIPS.” This company had contracts throughout the war and is one of the better known makers of 1858 pattern forage caps.  [ad]
